A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be a part of Laura Eubanks’ Succulent Squad. For those of you who missed the post on the Digging In Gathering where Laura was one of our speakers you can catch up on that post here- Digging In Gathering 2017
Laura is the owner & founder of Design for Serenity, a succulent landscape design business in San Diego, CA. Laura is the Succulent Queen and she has an amazing YouTube channel where you can learn anything you want about succulents. Not only is Laura one crazy talented woman she is also an all around amazing person! To work with her for two days was an awesome experience!
Honestly, until I heard Laura speak at the Digging In Gathering I didn’t know much about succulents, nor did I really care about them since it’s not something I am able to widely use in Michigan. After being on the Succulent Squad all that has changed and I can now say I’m a succulent freak!!
When Laura does large installs she calls on volunteers to help by being a part of the Succulent Squad. When you show up she gives you your very own Succulent Squad shirt and your off to work! It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn from Laura and watch her succulent design talent in action.
I took part in the Succulent Squad for two days at a private residence in Thousand Oaks, CA (outside of L.A.). It was a beautiful home in an amazing location nestled in the hills!
With a spectacular view!
Here is Laura’s YouTube “before” video of the project Thousands Oak Project-Before Video
It’s crazy to think it had only been a few weeks before this photo that Laura and I had been together in Chicago for Digging In. Thankfully it’s more much warmer in CA! Laura holding the lucky horseshoe she found on the job site.
The first day there were two other volunteers and our first task was to plant this bird bath.
Yep, that’s me the short one in the bunch, along with volunteers Randi & Vicky!
Here’s a small glimpse of the succulent assortment waiting to be added to the landscape. Love at first sight!
During the install Laura shoots her Live Facebook and YouTube videos. Her darling daughter, Hannah, is behind the camera. You can check out one of her live Facebook videos here- Design for Serenity
Laura leaves no crack or crevice unplanted. This rock had the perfect crevice down the middle for Laura to plant in. Succulents are amazing plants, they can grow just about anywhere, soil or roots are not necessary!
The finished rock planting below, it kind of looks like a dragon’s tail!
What Laura does is called Succulent Tapestry, she weaves in all sorts of colors and textures with her designs. The tapestries began to form at the end of the day.
We began to wrap up day one of the Succulent Squad. In this photo the happy homeowner checks in on the days progress. Laura’s husband Greg and her daughter Hannah make it a family affair, all a part of Design for Serenity.
Stayed tuned for Succulent Squad-Day 2 more great photos to share!
